Ownership

Corporately operated full-service banner focused on Western Canada (with some Ontario stores). Empire Company Limited (which owns the Sobeys chain) announced on June 12, 2013 a deal to buy 213 Safeway stores in Western Canada for C$5.8 billion; Sobeys Inc. completed the purchase of substantially all of the assets of Canada Safeway on November 4, 2013. The Safeway stores were concentrated in Western cities including Vancouver/BC. The Canadian Safeway operation is separate from the U.S. Safeway/Albertsons business. [1][2][3]
