Ownership

Not a commercial franchise. The CO-OP-branded food stores are owned and operated by independent local retail co-operatives (member-owned associations), which together own Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) and form the Co-operative Retailing System (CRS). FCL is the wholesaler/federation that supplies these stores (bakery, deli, produce, meat, pharmacy and private-label goods, plus marketing and administrative support) but does not own the individual retail locations. The shared CO-OP grocery brand operates 'from Vancouver Island to northwestern Ontario and into the Arctic,' including British Columbia (Vancouver Island, the Interior/Okanagan and Northern BC). NOTE: a distinct banner record (co-op-food-store-otter) already covers the specific Co-op food stores run by Otter Co-op in the Metro Vancouver / Fraser Valley area; this banner covers the broader FCL/CRS Co-op Food Store brand across BC and Western Canada. In 2024 FCL also launched 'Co-op Essentials,' a newly designed food store format, in Surrey, BC. [1][2][3]
