The North West Company Inc. is a Canadian retailer headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and trades publicly on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker NWC. The company was established in 1987 when a group of investors, including employees, acquired the Northern Stores Division from the Hudson's Bay Company, and it operated as the North West Company Fund before changing its legal name to The North West Company Inc. in January 2011. Its Northern banner is the original core retail format, serving food and general merchandise to remote and rural communities across northern and western Canada. The company also operates other banners including NorthMart, Giant Tiger (in certain markets), and international stores under Alaska Commercial Company, Cost-U-Less, and RiteWay Food Markets. [1][2]
