Kootenay Co-op
Kootenay Country Store Co-operative · cooperative · HQ Canada
The Kootenay Co-op is an independent, consumer (member-owned) retail co-operative grocery store located at 777 Baker Street in downtown Nelson, British Columbia. It has been cooperatively owned and operated since 1975 and is one of Canada's largest independent retail food co-operatives. Membership is a one-time $50 share that confers one share/ownership and one vote; the co-op's own site describes it as 'a store built and run by 17,000 people in this community' (an older BCBusiness profile cited 9,851 members at the time). It is governed by a member-elected Board of Directors. Critically, it is NOT part of Federated Co-operatives Limited / the Co-operative Retailing System (it does not carry the shared CO-OP grocery banner and is not a member-owner of FCL); it is a standalone natural/organic-foods co-operative. General Manager Deirdre Lang (BCBusiness): 'We are independent. We don't report to a head office. We are our own.' parent_slug is null: it is collectively owned by its ~17,000 member-owners and has no corporate parent. [1][2][3]
