Independent, family-owned Japanese grocery and prepared-foods business. Founded in 1977 in Vancouver's Japantown by Shigeru ('Shig') Hirai and his wife Akemi, who had earlier run the Maneki Japanese Restaurant. The business continues under the next generation of the family - their son-in-law Jeff Matsuda and grandchildren Megan and Ryan. Operates three locations in British Columbia: Vancouver (flagship relocated to Clark Drive at Venables in 1994), Richmond (opened 1989) and Victoria (opened 1991). [1][2]
